Cancer Awareness Programmes

Every year, 31st May is celebrated as ‘World No Tobacco Day’ all over the world. This day was celebrated at Parmeshwar chawl, Asarwa, Ahmedabad jointly with Unnat NGO. The main objective of the programme was to campaign against bad habit of tobacco use in human and to convey basic information about use of tobacco and how it causes cancer disease to the community. IEC material was distributed among the people. Drawing Competition of High School children was held on the subject of “Quit Tobacco”. A talk on tobacco related health hazards particularly cancer was given on Television and information about facts and figures of tobacco consumption and tobacco related cancers were explained to print media. An awareness campaign was arranged in collaboration with Zydus and Karuna Care Foundation staff on 30th May. They distributed Pamphlets on “Health Hazards of Tobacco” to all patients and relatives. A street-play on “Vyasan mukti” was arranged in pediatric ward in day time and was replayed in “Sanskar Chawk” on evening of st 1 June 2013.

Every year 7th November is celebrated as National Cancer Awareness Day. On this day, a programme on cancer awareness and detection camp was organized at Suubbu Yuva Kendra, Slum area of Noble nagar, Ahmedabad. The exhibition theme centered on early detection, warning signals and prevention of breast, cervix and oral cancers. Senior clinicians from Surgery, Radiology and Gynec oncology department actively participated in this event and they explained the risk factors, sign and symptoms of cancer, early detection and prevention of cancer to the local inhabitants. Mobile cancer screening van (Sanjeevani Rath) was also made available on site for mammography and consultation. A total of 36 individuals were screened during the camp. Among them one male was identified to have early oral lesion and two females were having suspicious breast anomalies and referred to GCRI for further evaluation.
